The Freire-UDL Literacy-Alfabetización Program addresses the urgent need to improve the literacy-learning outcomes of nonliterate, Spanish-speaking students with interrupted or limited formal education (SIFE/SLIFE) via a research-based method and the necessary materials.
GOALS FOR TEACHERS
- To empower SIFE teachers of Spanish-speaking, nonliterate EL students with culturally relevant tools to teach literacy in the students’ home language.
- To provide teachers with clear and complete lesson plans with all necessary program materials.
GOALS FOR STUDENTS
- To enable Spanish-speaking students with interrupted formal schooling (SIFE) to read in Spanish in 40 or fewer classroom hours.
- To create a path to literacy in English language.
- To enable SIFE to develop high-level reasoning (reading the world) while learning to read.
